Ode to the Subway?

There I go. I compose a lovely little riff for the world's greatest underground railway system and what do I get?

I jumped on the train on Saturday to go downtown to my favorite butcher. I'll tell you about that another

time. Anyway, things were going rather well, I changed trains in midtown, and was in the Village in no

time. I did my shopping, and hopped back on the train, assuming I'd be home in a jiffy. Guess what?

When I changed in midtown, things went sour. I sat for over 35 minutes, waiting patiently as the

platform became more and more crowded. Finally, a train came lumbering into the station. Needless

to say, it was jammed. I squeezed on anyway, at this point, only wanting to get above ground and get some

air. If you'll recall, Saturday was particularly hot and humid. So, there we were, smashed together like the

proverbial sardines, when, as the doors were closing, the gravely, incomprehensible voice of the conductor advises

us not to crowd as there is a train right behind this one. Oh well. What can I say. I still love the subway!
